OUR HISTORY:

The American Institute of Tae Kwon Do is a family owned and operated martial arts school. It was established in 1991 by Neale, 5th dan, and Erika, 2nd dan, White. Over the course of 17 years they promoted over 140 black belts of all ages and developed the school into prosperity in terms of both quanity and especially quality of students. As of June 2007 the Wagner family took over for the Whites while they moved down to Georgia. Rich Wagner, 3rd Dan, is the head instructor and has also trained at the facility for over 13 years. During the course of his 15 year career in martial arts Rich has also trained in Japanese Karate, Aikido and Kung Fu - but has always come back to AITKD. Together with their staff of instructors and assistant instructors, Debbie Russel - 3rd dan, Sue Solek - 2nd dan, Nick Douglas - 2nd dan, Pete Solek - 1st dan, Chris Mulligan - 1st dan, and Brian Gagnon - 1st dan, the Wagner family has dedicated itself to continue the great tradition of the school while adding to its rich history and talent pool for years to come.

OUR PHILOSPHY:

There are many different styles of martial arts and even Tae Kwon Do. One of the important aspects when choosing a martial arts school is that you agree with their philosphy of teaching and practicing their art. As a martial arts school we try to teach concepts that are univeral to all forms of martial arts. Our goal is to instill in our students the ability to be good martial artists. To us that means teaching them humility, self-discipline, self-control, self-confidence. We want to strengthen our students mind as well as body.

As a Tae Kwon Do School we practice traditional Tae Kwon Do. Currently there are many different types of Tae Kwon Do, but they can, for the most part, be broken down into sport and art oriented. The sport oriented schools focus mainly on fighting in the style of the olympics. The art oriented schools more closely resemble a traditional martial arts school. That is, we are well rounded with focus on form, technique, mindset, AND sparring. We also place emphasis on breaking at AITKD - this improves power and the ability to focus in our students. We are a black belt school, and as such only promote those to black belt who we believe exemplify our philosphy.
